Trove

Search over 6 million records online including images, books, manuscripts, maps, newspapers and photography collections from the National Library and from State Collections around Australia.

Search for images of your suburb using the image search TAB in TROVE.

 

State BDMs

Most states have placed their historical BDM information online for people to search for free. Not SA.

Listed on your notes sheet is a list of weblinks to State BDMs. The same list can be found on Malcolm’s Blog page at: https://searchmenow.blogspot.com/

The Tasmanian Archives is a great BDM resource as they have scanned many original documents that you can view online for free.

 

Australian and Overseas Family History Resources

Ancestry Library Edition

Ancestry Library Edition is available via the library catalogue and is available to be searched for FREE in the library

Ancestry Library Edition contains thousands of online genealogy databases that you can search for FREE (need to be in the library).

Search for what is available via the “New Collection” TAB, then filter your search by country and type of resource. This is a great way to see what is available in a specific country.

List of thousands of genealogy links from overseas. Good site to look at if you want to search for records from a specific country.

 

Genuki

Click on the map they click on the “county” to view what family history resources there are for the specific county.

 

Free BMD

Indexes of Births, Marriages and Deaths in the UK. Searchable database of UK where you can search for births, deaths and marriages information.

Newspapers

Trove newspapers

Search Australian newspapers from 1803 – 1954. Some newspapers have been indexed up to 2000 (where the publication has given the National Library access to their paper.

 

Papers Past (NZ)

British Newspaper Archive

Search database of British newspapers but note, you must pay to view. Do get 3 Free searches but need to register with your email address.

 

Military Records

Australian War Memorial

Searching for Australian military records? This is a great site to search.

Use people search at: https://www.awm.gov.au/advanced-search/people.

 

Commonwealth War Graves

www.cwgc.org

Search for information on soldiers killed in battle, including information about their location (cemetery oversees) and view original documents show the location of the soldier’s burial.

 

Find War Dead at: https://www.cwgc.org/find/find-war-dead/

Find information such as Service number, Regiment, Date of death, Burial location, Country of Service and Additional information (That can include “Next of Kin” information).

 

AIF project

Contains a lot of information about soldiers that served in WW1 – information is taken from various sources and is a great overview of a soldier’s history of involvement in the war.

 

Department of Veteran Affairs Records

Search for military records of solders that fought in wars that Australian has been involved in including Korean, Vietnam and Gulf wars.

 

South Australian Red Cross Information Bureau

Records of the South Australian Red Cross Information Bureau held in the collection of the State Library of South Australia (SLSA). From 1916 until 1919. This includes letters of enquiry from people in Australia about soldiers fighting overseas.
